Weigh‐feeders are used to feed bulk solids at a
controlled rate into the process. Rugged design
makes them ideally suited for use under
adverse conditions. As the variable speed
pre‐feeder feeds product onto the synchronous
speed weigh belt, the weight of this material is
instantaneously sensed and transmitted to the
feeder& controller. In turn, the controller
modulates the variable speed drive of the
pre‐feeder to maintain the precise feed rate as
selected. A closed-loop PID control system
ensures precise control over the rate of flow of
material. The system consists of a Control
Panel, Load Cells, and an Optical Encoder. The
weigh‐feeder is a programmable electronic
system, which interfaces to Load Cell and
Encoder. It calculates the rate of the
measured belt load and belt speed.

In loss-in-weight feeding, the entire feeder, hopper and material are continuously weighed. As the feeder discharges material, the rate of decline in system weight is computed, and feeder speed is adjusted to maintain the desired rate.
In practice, performance accuracy is achieved with the demands on weighing and control operations in loss-in-weight feeding.
A loss-in-weight feeder is used to precisely dose a product into a process at a desired flow rate or in batches.
The feeding device with a hopper containing the product to be fed is placed on a platform scale or suspended on load cells.
The product is discharged from the hopper by the metering device and the resultant weight loss per unit of time is determined by the weighing and control system. This actual weight loss per unit time is compared to a desired weight loss per unit time.
Any difference between the actual and desired weight loss per unit of time results in a correction to the speed of the feeding device. When the hopper content reaches a predetermined minimum weight level, the control by weight loss is briefly interrupted and the hopper is refilled.
During the refill period, the controller regulates the speed of the feeding device based upon the historical weight and speed that was determined during the previous weight loss cycle.
